My 2nd shrimp died. This time it's the male. He seemed fine two days ago when I fed them, but they are getting to the end of their lifespan. I hope it's not my cutting down their food, but I feed them regularly every two days and always made sure the shrimp got a pellet so I doubt that was the issue. Must have been age. He must have died yesterday because the female shrimp already tore him apart and I checked on him two days ago when I fed them. The only things that are left (icky) are his front legs and the carapace where his eyes were (no actual eyes) and his tail, which looks a lot like a cocktail shrimp (ugh). I'll have Chris fish it out when he gets home from work (I'm still traumatized from fishing out the dead fish over a year ago). That much extra protein in the tank isn't good and I'd rather the tank kept getting flakes than just this big piece of food left for days.
So...That leaves my last super-mama female shrimp. I guess the big and strong do survive since she was the biggest shrimp of the three. She's carrying another set of eggs too, which will be her last since I don't have the male anymore. I'll have to watch her carefully. I may get some algae eating shrimp next because I have this funky algae that is growing that they could eat, but I don't know. I may wait till this female passes on because she's probably 2-3 times bigger than them.
It's a sad day in fish tank land. My shrimp always entertained me.
